critic’s rating:  2.5/5 For the uninitiated, The Addams Family started off as a comic strip drawn by Charles Addams and published in The New Yorker between 1938 and 1988. The strip was made into a TV series in 1964 and thereafter various animated and live-action adaptations, among them a Broadway musical followed. The present film uses 3D animation technology to bring the misadventures of the beloved undead family to life. Father Gomez (Oscar Isaac) and mother Morticia (Charlize Theron) adore each other and are loving parents to their daughter Wednesday (Chloe Grace Moretz) and son Pugsley (Finn Wolfhard). Their extended family will be arriving in two weeks for the traditional Addams coming-of-age ceremony. Pugsley, who loves explosives, has to dance with a sword for his manhood ceremony and he isn’t sure he’s up to it. Wednesday wants to explore the outside world and hence enrols in the local school, making friends with Parker (Elsie Fisher). Parker’s mom Margaux (Allison Janney) is the star of a home makeover reality show. She wants to sell all the houses in the new Assimilation community and is determined that nothing can come in her way. She wants to give the Addams’ home a makeover as she feels its ungainly presence will turn away buyers. Things turn nasty when she incites the neighbours against the family. Their relatives have arrived and all goes wrong for Pugsley, who can’t dance to save his life. But saving the family is the basic essence of the Mazurka and given the charge by his father, Pugsley proves more than a match for the rabble-rousing neighbours. Wednesday chips in as well and thanks to her efforts the family finally finds acceptance with the normals. We’re all weird in our own way and thereby we should acknowledge the humanity of those who are different from us seems to be the film’s message. Driving the irony home, the normal folk are shown to be more monstrous than the actual monstrous family. The pitchfork and torches of an earlier era are transformed into a neighbourhood watch app. The flair and wit of the cartoon series are missing here. What regaled us in the series was the unfolding of different quirks of the family members. We loved the fights between Wednesday and Pugsley as well, as they tried to murder each other in gruesome ways. Compared to what we have seen earlier, the proceedings seem dull by contrast. Also, the animation is too staid and doesn’t fully take advantage of the wacky source material. Allison Janney is the screen stealer here as the villainous Margaux who likes to peep into the lives of her neighbours through cameras she has cunningly hidden throughout the community. The rest of the hyped voice star cast doesn’t get much to do really. For example, Snoop Dogg, who voices cousin Itt just speaks a sentence of gibberish. This bland film needed more wit and macabre. Watch it just to reacquaint yourself with the beloved characters you’ve grown up watching. Otherwise, avoid. Trailer : The Addams Family
