critic’s rating:  3.5/5 The legend goes that Stephen King, who wrote the novel The Shining didn’t like director Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of it. King wrote Doctor Sleep as a sequel to his earlier novel. Director Mike Flanagan has made his in such a way that it not only adapts Doctor Sleep the book but also connects with the cinematic universe of the The Shining. And therein lies his genius. Kubrick’s is such an iconic product that it would be foolish to match it head-on. And hence Flanagan has toned down the horror elements, especially in the first half. What he has done instead is to give us a glimpse of the mind a person who ‘shines’. The ability is both a gift and a curse and the director presents both aspects of it. Dan Torrance (Ewan McGregor) is the son of Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson). Having escaped the horrors of the Overlook Hotel in 1980, he has relocated to Florida with his mom. The supernatural hasn’t left him and he keeps having ghostly visitations. A friendly spirit teaches him to counter them. But he grows up to be a broken, alcoholic individual. He meets Billy Freeman (Cliff Curtis) in a small town in 2011 and finds a job in a hospice, taking care of people who are dying, being there for them in their last moments and thus earning the sobriquet of Doctor Sleep. His life takes a turn when a girl Abra Stone (Kyliegh Curran) contacts him through psychic powers. She’s more gifted than him and the due start communicating. She informs him that there is a group of spirit vampires who are targetting children having the gift and she has witnessed one such murder spiritually. She informs him that she can track the killers but needs his help. Initially hesitant, Dan later agrees and sets up an ambush. He and Billy kill most vampires but one gets away, kills Abra’s father and kidnaps her. Their leader Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson) too is alive. To kill Rose and rescue Abra, Dan has to go back to the place he dreads the most and confront demons he had left behind…While Kubrick’s focussed mostly on Jack Nicholson and was set in a single location, the present is more of a multiple-character, multiple-location dealing with different viewpoints. While Dan tries to hide his talent from the world, Abra doesn’t want to keep it under wraps and is all for confronting the evildoers. Rose sees it as a means to prolong her own life as well as that of her followers. She’s a monster willing to kill kids to achieve her end. There are sequences of astral travels and depictions of memory palaces in the . It’s a slow burner leading towards an explosive climax which makes intelligent use of a familiar landscape. Ewan McGregor gives a restrained portrayal of a soul troubled by his psychic abilities and well, shines in his role. Rebecca Ferguson is delightful as the energy vampire yearning for immortality and teenager Kyliegh Curran makes an impact as the valiant teenager Abra. Summing up, the offers a fresh perspective to the shining universe and will surely appeal to both new and old fans. Trailer : Doctor Sleep
